AUGUSTA, Ga. – Positioned in the second cut alongside Augusta National’s 13th fairway, Scottie Scheffler faced what Bobby Jones, the club’s co-founder, once called a "momentous decision."
His ball was 215 yards away from the pin, a distance within his range for a single swing. However, several challenges complicated his decision.
To account for the steep slope of the fairway, he would need to modify his swing. Additionally, the short but challenging rough at Augusta National would decrease his ball's spin rate by hundreds of RPMs, complicating his ability to hold the increasingly firm green. Compounding these difficulties was a narrow tributary of Rae's Creek that skirted the green. Though small and easily jumped over, this deceptive hazard has ended many hopeful runs at the Masters.
